Fly from Anchorage to Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka for our 8 day birding and Russian cultural experience. You will be accompanied by your host Sharon Allred. She has birded in Russia many times in 14 years.

Tour 1:The first day we will fly from Anchorage to Petropavlovsk, Russia. After our arrival we will fly in helicopters to a nature park where we will spend six days birding. The park has cabins and natural hot springs. We will leave daily on our outings accompanied by our Russian Scientist and guide. Our small group will have a Russian interpreter with us as well as Sharon Allred. On the sixth day we will helicopter from our wilderness location back to our hotel in town. On our last day we will tour the town seeing points of interest.

Our Russian ornithologist, Edward Malinovsky is known in Kamchatka as the author of many scientific publications including books about the Commander Islands. We will get to view his photo archives of Kamchatka’s birds with more than 160 species.
Two guides for eight people is a great ratio. Ouzel Expeditions always has favored groups with a maximum of 8.

Tour 2: If you like to go birding all day and sleep in a hotel at night this is a comfortable tour. We fly to Petropavlovsk the first day of our tour, check in to our hotel and meet our Russian Scientist. He will show us his photos of birds this evening. Every morning after we will go birding ino our own private bus. Edward Malinovsky knows all the great birding areas around Kamchatka. We will also see many nests and learn about bird behavior. He is a wealth of knowledge!

Brief History: In 1740 Vitus Bering sailed into Avacha Bay. He named the spot after his two ships, St. Peter and St. Paul, hence the name Petropavlovsk. Bering also discovered the Aleutians and Commander Islands on the same voyage. Petopavlovsk is surrounded by beauty having two volcanoes, Avachinsky and Koryaksky to the north and Avacha Bay to the south. There are 29 Active volcanoes on the Kamchatka peninsula.
