Float Fishing Alaska

Lake Creek and the Talachulitna River
Alaska trips originate in Anchorage. Spend the night  in Anchorage before the trip. Try to arrive sometime around 4 P.M. the day before the trip. We recommend the Barratt Best Western Hotel, 1-800-221-7550. Over the years we have found them to have consistently great service. They provide free shuttle service to and from the airport and they can store your extra suitcases and unwanted things while you are on the river. It also works well for us if everyone going on the trip stays at the same place.  The day before the trip we meet you at the Barratt Best Western for our pre trip meeting in the lobby at approximately 5 P.M. After you get to your room,  give us a call, (local 783-2216) so we can make arrangements of just when to meet you and the rest of the group. We will give you your waterproof gear, sleeping bags, plane tickets and go over details of the trip.

Have a good breakfast the morning your trip departs . We travel a long way the first day. Early in the morning take your hotel's free shuttle service to Lake Hood. Ouzel will meet you there. We load the Beaver float planes and fly into the Alaskan wilderness.  Once we land in the lake we unload the float planes. The guides begin pumping up the rafts and load them for the float down river. Off we go! Each night we camp on the gravel bars.

Daily Schedule : Coffee is at 7 am, breakfast is at 8. We break camp and we're floating by 9:30 or 10. We float around 10 miles each day stopping and wading and fishing. This only take 3 or 4 hours so we have lots of time to stop and fish. We stop at around 5 or 6 and the guides do the work of setting up camp and you're able to fish and relax. Fishing around camp is good evenings and mornings. Sometime we stay in one camp location two nights. We call this a layover day. We fish around and it makes a nice break in routine. It's always nice to get floating again and be on the river seeing new country every day.
At the trips end : The float planes come in at mid day and we fly to Lake Hood in Anchorage where you take the shuttle back to the Barratt. You leave your borrowed waterproof bags etc. with the Barratt staff at the front desk for us.
